Specifications
Why look at specifications?
Specifications, or specs for the tech savvy, are extremely important when researching computers. They tell you how the computer will function, its speed, whether it can multi-task and it’s ability at certain jobs. If you didn’t research specifications you would have no idea what the computer could do until you have bought it.
Important Specs
Battery
Desktop computers don’t come with batteries obviously but notebooks and laptops do. The battery is important because you need to know how long the computer can be on for and used while traveling. A good battery life is 5-6 hours of continuous use, but some batteries can last up to 8 hours. It all depends on what type of programs you are running. A large video game will use up a battery faster than a word document would.
Weight
A very important factor when choosing a notebook is the weight of it. You will be lugging this thing around a lot so the weight is very important and the lighter it is the better. Typical notebooks weigh about 8 pounds, depending on the battery, screen size, and hard drive space.
Processor
The processor helps with the speed of the computer and its multi-tasking ability. Most computers have a duo core processor. This means that the amount of gigahertz it runs is divided in half between the two cores. Basically, if you have a lot of gigahertz with a one core processor, it will run ONE program, very quickly. If you have a duo core or a trio core processor, it will run more than one program a little less quickly than one core.
Hard Drive
The hard drive is the space you have on your computer for files, games, media, ect… This space is measured in bytes. Here is an understanding of bytes:
1,000,000,000 bytes = 1,000,000 kilobytes = 1,000 mega bytes = 1 gigabyte.
Most hard drives are measured in Gigabytes. To put this in perspective, here are some examples:
1 song = approx. 4 megabytes
1 word document = 10 – 100 kilobytes
1 large program = 800 mb – 1.5 gigabytes
The hard drive is like your long term memory. The bigger your space (GB) the more information you can store.
RAM
If the hard drive is your long term memory, the RAM is your short term memory. When you run programs like the internet or writing documents, the RAM is hard at work making it all work fluently. The more programs, the harder the RAM has to work and it could eventually be overloaded. This leads to programs closing and a slower computer.
USB ports
The last thing we will touch on are USB ports. These ports are designed to give you an easier time adding hardware to your computer. USB ports are used for IPods, printers, keyboards, and external hard drives. Even right not you are using your mouse, which is connected to the computer through a USB port. The number of USB ports varies with computers but you should always have a few in case you want to add your iPod, mouse, or camera to your computer.
Conclusion
We have covered just a few of the different and complex parts of computers, but these are the most important specs to research when deciding on a computer. Familiarize yourself with the different specifications of your computer and learn what your own computer can do.
